Minneapolis, Minn. – General Mills was recognized today as a top place to work for LGBT equality by America’s largest civil rights organization, Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The company received a perfect score of 100 percent for the 7th consecutive year on Human Rights Campaign’s annual Corporate Equality Index (CEI), a national benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBT workplace equality.

Among the more than 1,000 participants, a total of 391 companies received a score of 100 percent on the 2016 CEI, earning the distinction of "Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality."

“At General Mills, diversity and inclusion is not just the right thing to do, it’s a business strategy,” said Ken Charles, vice president of global inclusion and staffing. “We work hard to create a culture that fosters openness, understanding and appreciation of employees’ difference, and in turn, unlock the potential of our diverse experiences and enable higher performing teams.”

The 2016 CEI evaluates participating companies on LGBT-related policies and practices, including: non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs, and public engagement with the LGBT community.

HRC Foundation Workplace Equality program director, Deena Fidas said: “In this 2016 Corporate Equality Index, hundreds of major businesses responded to our new standards for workplace equality with exceptional leadership. General Mills not only meets these standards, it goes above and beyond the call of duty, making commitment to equality a fundamental aspect of its corporate values."

General Mills has long been committed to creating a culture of inclusiveness.

With a mission to create a safe, open and productive work environment for all, the company established an employee network for LGBT employees called Betty’s Family. Taking this mission a step further, the employee network was opened up to friends and allies of the LGBT community. The goal of the network’s Ally initiatives is to help other employees understand how support from colleagues can make the workplace feel more inclusive.

Today, allies of Betty’s Family at General Mills demonstrate support for their colleagues in a variety of ways — from simply wearing an ALLY-branded badge as a visible signal that they are supportive, to taking a leadership role to campaign for LGBT equality in the community.
