Company recognized for its commitment to recruiting, retaining and supporting veterans

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Today, General Mills was recognized as a “Yellow Ribbon Company” for its proactive support of military service members and their families.

At a proclamation ceremony held at the General Mills headquarters, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton presented General Mills with the award.

“I can’t overstate the importance of today and my gratitude to General Mills, Ken Powell, and your senior leadership team for spearheading this effort,” said Dayton. “This will be an ongoing (program) for veterans serving this great country for years to come.”

The Yellow Ribbon Company program honors Minnesota companies for supporting military service members in a variety of ways, including financially, through training, development and community outreach programs.

“General Mills thanks all of our veteran employees for their service to our company and our country,” said Ken Powell, chairman and chief executive officer of General Mills. “It’s an honor to be recognized as a Yellow Ribbon Company, but the real tribute goes to our more than 1,000 veterans and their families for their sacrifice and continued commitment to our nation’s military.”

During his remarks, Powell also announced the launch of the General Mills Veterans Network, a new affinity group for General Mills employees designed to enhance how the company recruits and retains veteran employees and advances veteran causes through community outreach.

Other examples of General Mills’ commitment to veterans include a mentoring program with American Corporate Partners that matches current employees with returning veterans and the General Mills Veterans Club, which was formed in 2007 to support General Mills employees who are serving on active duty. The club is involved in many activities, such as sending holiday cards, care packages and phone cards to troops.

“General Mills leads the way for how organizations can support our nation's military,” said Annette Brechon Kuyper, director of Military Outreach for the Minnesota Department of Military Affairs. “This is a national model of how organizations can make a positive impact to service members, veterans and military families.”

Today, General Mills also received recognition for its commitment to veterans from G.I. Jobs Magazine, which released its annual Military Friendly Employers list.
