The Food and Drug Administration approved a health claim in 1997 that linked soluble fiber from oats – like the fiber in Cheerios – to reduced risk of coronary disease.



A peer-reviewed, clinical study in 1998 showed Cheerios – as part of a heart-healthy diet – can reduce high cholesterol levels, a major risk factor for coronary heart disease.
