Job Overview

Lawyers

General Mills generally hires experienced lawyers with expertise in a specific area. Most lawyers join the legal department with three to seven years experience. While technical excellence, superior writing and strong academic credentials are assumed, business focus and problem solving skills are the hallmarks of a General Mills lawyer. Our business is global, complex, rapidly changing, and large scale. We are looking for lawyers who relish the challenge of learning new businesses and applying their expertise and judgment on a daily basis.

Paralegals

General Mills also has opportunities for paralegal candidates who want to join our legal team. Candidates should have a bachelor's degree or paralegal certificate with related background. Successful candidates have exceptional communication, research and interpersonal skills, and solid judgment.

Training and Development

While most lawyers enter General Mills with a developed area of expertise, they quickly realize they have much to learn about the business. Therefore, all new lawyers attend the Core Business Essentials class, which is designed to introduce all new employees to General Mills' businesses and acclimate them to the company culture. Lawyers are also placed in functional teams and receive personal training and assistance from their more experienced colleagues.

General Mills expects its lawyers to remain current in their chosen fields, and often encourages the development of new areas of expertise specific to General Mills. Therefore, the company encourages lawyers to attend local, regional and national continuing education classes. As a lawyer progresses through General Mills, there are numerous opportunities for additional training in areas such as leadership development, communication skills, management and many other areas.

Education

Competitive candidates for positions in the Legal department have a J.D. or equivalent degree.
