Food safety

Both inside our company and working with governments and organizations around the world, we strive to continuously improve food safety and understanding.

We play a leading role in supporting research-oriented efforts to promote food safety, and to work jointly with the food industry on ways to improve the health profile of our food and the environmental impact of our products.

In October 2010, for example, we hosted two scientific conferences:

  • A gathering of more than 15 leading toxicologists from several global companies who met to share best practices for ensuring food safety. The group also discussed how to communicate complex topics such as risk tolerance to a general audience. The group has pledged to not use food safety as a competitive advantage and to elevate the voice of science in issues concerning food and health.
  • A meeting of the Food Industry Microbiology Roundtable. Its goal was also to promote food safety across the industry by openly sharing experiences and insights. Nearly 100 food industry microbiologists gathered to discuss new techniques in risk assessment, the role of testing in food safety, the impact of epidemiology and the need for improved methods in process validation.\

Throughout 2010 and the year before, we also actively supported the passage of the comprehensive food safety bill that was approved by the U.S. Congress in December 2010. We believe the new law will help ensure the integrity of the U.S. food safety system.

Global partnerships
General Mills and several other global food companies are collaborating with the Partnership Training Institute Network to develop a food safety curriculum that can be broadly shared.

The group was formed in 2008 through the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, an organization comprising government representatives from 21 countries.

HAACP
In conjuction with NASA more than 30 years ago, General Mills developed HAACP – the Harzard Analysis and Critical Control Points process for ensuring food safety.

Today, HAACP is the food industry's gold standard.
